#140 Propose to make Pipewire as default audio service (instead PulseAudio)
Opened 6 months ago by milachew. Modified 3 months ago

At the moment, Leap 15.5 uses PulseAudio. Pipewire is already fully used in RHEL 9 and Debian 12 (GNOME) and is a more modern replacement for PulseAudio. And also, since July last year, it is offered by default to new Tumbleweed users.

Since the Pipewire version in the 15.5 repository is not far behind (0.3.64) from the version from RHEL 9 (0.3.67) and Debian 12 (0.3.65), I think it's worth considering the proposal to switch completely to Pipewire for Leap 15.6.

How likely is such an event, given that, most likely, it will be necessary to support Pipewire more closely, given that it will become the default?

Did anyone ever get upgrading from PulseAudio to PipeWire done in Tumbleweed? That would be something we'd need for such a transition elsewhere...

The transition instructions are available on the openSUSE Wiki. It is implied that it is working for TW as well.

If you meant reviews, then they are also on reddit, for example.

Let me know if that's not enough.

According to the wiki page, the transition is not automatic. Fedora's transition was automatic. We need a tested automatic transition.

This would probably make sense for Leap 16.0. Users should ideally have the same experience as in SLES 15 and we have about a month and half until 15.6 beta.
